With just two weeks for the 3G iPad tablet goes on sale, Apple Inc. is trying to secure content for the device, people familiar with the situation, which have reduced the initial ambitions for the long awaited device.
Since last Friday, when it began conducting pre-orders from the iPad, Apple has sold hundreds of thousands of units, the sources claim. One of these people said Apple could sell more iPads in the first three months the number of iPhones sold during the same period after its debut.
However, the company still is negotiating with media groups to achieve a reduction in prices in the television programs that people can download to the device, the sources said. Apple is also expected to work closely with publishers of newspapers, magazines and textbooks to find new ways to present content digitally printed on the iPad, but had to postpone these plans to focus on other content, said a person.
Apple is rushing to complete some negotiations with potential content partners for the 3G ipad tablet content before the launch of the iPad on April 3, the sources said. But determining the content is proving challenging as some potential partners weigh the advantages of working with Apple against possible threats to their current revenue sources, added these people.
